SCHOOL OF THE ARTS | UNIVERSITI SAINS MALAYSIA
Fine Arts
The academic field is centred on research in fine art and visual culture in general and studio practice. The former allows researchers to explore and challenge the established aesthetics as well as formal and conceptual principles in fine art, art theory, art history and visual culture. This includes research on visual arts, manuscripts, tangible and intangible material culture, visual communication (photography), photo-media, fibre art, textile materials and applied arts and crafts. While studio practice is designed to engage visual artists in independent research that constitutes an original contribution to the understanding of contemporary visual arts in the form of speculative inquiry. This would indulge the artist in a critical and intellectual academic discourse on the proposed research topic. Central to the program is a balance between studio practice and the conceptual and theoretical concerns that underpin artistic research. Candidates will undertake a major project that culminates in an exhibition to present their work for assessment, together with a thesis that includes visual documentation and research of the studied topic. They may work with installation, sculpture, photo-media, drawing, printmaking and other object-based artistic practice, where the utilization of natural resources and recycled material are encouraged.
