Dr. Muhammad Uzair Ismail is a researcher in the sciences of visual communication and semiotics in photography, art history, Islamic art and Malay culture. His research area is focused particularly on the Persian and Turkish artistic influence in the Malay world through archaeology and material culture. His research interest mainly revolves around intercultural visual language, symbolism and the acculturation of visual culture in Southeast Asia. His approach to research is multi-disciplinary where he combines art history, Islamic art and visual communication to analyze the complex and dynamic cultural interaction between the Islamic lands in the west with Southeast Asia, particularly the east coast region of the Malay Peninsula. His area of expertise includes analysis on Malay woodcarving and Islamic art motifs in Qur’an illumination (tezhib), tombstones (batu nisan Aceh), various cultural objects and Malay traditional weapon, Keris.
