PERSONAL STATEMENT
Theatre performances need to adhere to maqashid shari’ah based on Islamic values as mentioned by Imam Al-Ghazali; protect life, protect religion, protect reason, protect the state and protect self-respect. “Teater Memanusiakan Manusia” (Theater Humanizes People). Drama is a human discourse portraying a life story, a shadow of its past and an afterthought of the day. Drama is not just entertainment but rather it is an effective medium of upbringing and preaching. Plato (Republic) has written about good literary values as an effort to improve the soul of the Greek people in order to become useful citizens. Plato’s literary style seeks to shape people, awaken emotions. Aristotle (Poetic) also stated that drama is able to form humans. In the drama tragedy encourages stimulation of waking feelings of catharsis (poetic justice); fear, sympathy and empathy that can be a guide to man. Thus, a good drama must contain a good moral message for self and society based on religion, customs, culture and identity.

Profile
Dr. Mumtaz Begum Aboo Backer is a senior lecturer attached to the Department of Drama & Theatre, School of The Arts, Universiti Sains Malaysia. She is an academic and researcher in the field of performing arts and dance ethno choreology. Her book titled Dancing The Strong Woman in Malaysia (2011) is one of the first in the country to highlight and discuss issues on identity, feminism and the empowerment of women through the field of dance in Malaysia. Trained in Indian classical dance form Bharata Natyam, Malay traditional dances, contemporary dance techniques and Malay martial arts silat, she incorporates dance, creative movements, drama and story- telling in her artistic projects. She is a strong advocator of “Arts for All” and is actively involved in Arts Therapy for children with special needs. Mumtaz Begum is also a text book writer for the subject of Dance for Malaysian schools.
Personal Statement
Dance and acting has always been a vital part of me. I feel strong and empowered when I am on stage either saying my lines or moving each part of my limbs in a rhythmic way. Dance has a profound way of liberating yourself whilst acting gives you the power to speak your emotions and trust your impulses. Both dance and acting as a scholarly body of knowledge has the effects of bringing communities, practitioners, artists and academics together to articulate, collaborate, conserve and negotiate the various practices, styles, and ever evolving genres, an area that fascinates me.

Personal Statement
Performing Arts gives me a sense of purpose; a way to express different sides of myself, discover myself…to remember myself. I get to take unimaginable risks – to be free, to be open and honest about anything and everything, to be whoever I want and can be, fight the good fight when it would be so much easier to lie down and give up. I get courage from my craft. I am fearless when I’m in imaginary circumstance, where at times it makes me feel like I’m on top of the world. It not only helps me, it helps the other people that’s involved – the audience, the other cast members, the director, the writer, the producer – everyone is affected by one piece, by one moment in time that I get to be a part of. With every piece I deliver, I hope it will break barriers of intolerance and prejudice and eliminate any form of ignorance existing in today’s society. What else can make this kind of impact? Performing Arts is the only thing of progress that has stood the test of time. For me, there is no other option. I cannot imagine a life without the pursuit of this dream…
