Drama, Music and Creative Movements For Children with Cerebral Palsy
School of The Arts (Pusat Pengajian Seni) Universiti Sains Malaysia has been working since 2008 with the Cerebral Palsy Children’s Association of Penang to introduce drama, creative movements, story-telling and Gamelan. This project has involved Dr Mumtaz Begum Aboo Backer, Professor Dr Ghouse, Dr Johan Othman and Dr Pravina Manoharan as the chief contributors to activities and learning content to the children. We are celebrating our 11th year this year (2019) of working with these special group of children.
Among the goals of the project: • To improve the cognitive skills of children with cerebral palsy • To enhance the self-confidence of children with cerebral palsy • To improve the gross motor functions of children with cerebral palsy
To date School of The Arts has collaborated with the Cerebral Palsy centre in producing 6 creative productions involving the children to transfer knowledge of the usage of drama and theatre to improve the children’s skills in the areas mentioned above.
World Cerebral Palsy Day 2019 Celebration
In conjunction with World Cerebral Palsy Day on October 6, 2019, the community came together as one to raise awareness about the challenges of cerebral palsy. Dr Mumtaz with the assistance of Puan Azlina got the children to put together an adapta9on of Josephine Yoong’s “Timmy Tapir Learns To Do What’s Right” as a stage performance for those who came for World Cerebral Palsy Day
