Dr. Pravina Manoharan
Qualifications
BA, Music, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM); MA, Music, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM); PhD, Ethnomusicology, Monash University
Personal Statement
As a musician, I have always been intrigued by the role music plays within a community. Why does music matter? There is a greater significance beyond a composition, and recognizing the importance of music within various societies and cultures and how it functions, as a creative practice is the essence of ethnomusicology, an area that I specialise in. Furthermore, the articulation of the self against the larger fabric of a community’s musical practice is also fascinating as the identity of the composer, musician and audience is often manifested within a single composition.

PERSONAL STATEMENT
Theatre performances need to adhere to maqashid shari’ah based on Islamic values as mentioned by Imam Al-Ghazali; protect life, protect religion, protect reason, protect the state and protect self-respect. “Teater Memanusiakan Manusia” (Theater Humanizes People). Drama is a human discourse portraying a life story, a shadow of its past and an afterthought of the day. Drama is not just entertainment but rather it is an effective medium of upbringing and preaching. Plato (Republic) has written about good literary values as an effort to improve the soul of the Greek people in order to become useful citizens. Plato’s literary style seeks to shape people, awaken emotions. Aristotle (Poetic) also stated that drama is able to form humans. In the drama tragedy encourages stimulation of waking feelings of catharsis (poetic justice); fear, sympathy and empathy that can be a guide to man. Thus, a good drama must contain a good moral message for self and society based on religion, customs, culture and identity.
